A Chinese traveler (Hiuen Tsang) wrote that Kashi once had a hundred temples but Muslim invaders destroyed all the temples and built mosques. Built by King Harishchandra in the 11th century BCE, the Vishwanath Temple was renovated by Emperor Vikramaditya. It was destroyed after being sacked by Muhammad Ghori in 1194. According to historians, this great temple was destroyed by Muhammad Ghori in 1194. It was rebuilt in 1447 by Sultan Mahmud Shah of Jaunpur but again destroyed. Also in 1585 Raja Todermal, Pt. Dr. A. S. Bhatt in his book 'Dan Haravali' mentions that Todarmal had renovated the temple in 1585 AD. On April 18, 1669, Aurangzeb ordered the demolition of the Kashi Vishwanath temple. This series is still preserved in the Asiatic Library, Kolkata. This destruction was described by the writer Saki Mustaid Khan in the mosque of Alamgiri at that time. The temple here was destroyed by the orders of Aurangzeb and the Gyanvapi mosque was built. On September 2, 1669, Aurangzeb was informed that the destruction of the temple was complete.
After this, Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore renovated the #Kashi Vishwanath temple. It is believed that in the 18th century (1780s), Lord Shiva appeared to Ahilya Bai in a dream and requested her to build a temple here.
